He also said the absence of street lights, street names and the lack of access roads to certain areas are breeding grounds for crime.

The MEC of the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison in Mpumalanga, Mr Pat Ngomone, recently made a media statement in which he appealed to municipalities nationwide to assist in crime prevention.

He raised the matter of the absence of street names and streetlights that are missing or out of order.

“Street names is not a luxury, but a necessity for everybody to reach their destination,” Mr Ngomone said.

He also said the absence of street lights, street names and the lack of access roads to certain areas are breeding grounds for crime.

Criminals operate comfortably in the dark and motorists that are lost in unfamiliar streets in towns, presents an opportunity for hijacking and other criminal activities.

“Except for the fact that dark streets and corners are dangerous, we need street lights to read street names and directions at night,” he said.
