7-year-old boy drowns

Police suspect the boy had attempted to cross a swollen river on his way home after school

The body of a 7-year-old boy was found after a search that began on Tuesday when the boy was reported missing after attending school in Elukwatini (Mpumalanga)

Police spokesman for Mpumalanga, Lt Col Leonard Hlathi, said police suspect the boy had attempted to cross a swollen river on his way home after heavy rain had fallen in the area.

The search was resumed early on Wednesday morning.

Local police as well as Fire Fighters from Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality combed the creek where the boy was suspected to have drowned,  after a shoe was found on the river bank.

The body of the youngster was found trapped on a rock.

Police have appealed to the community to ensure that children are collected from school by responsible people, especially in the rainy season where children have to cross streams and rivers on their way home.
