Distinctions with no hope

Community members donated towards his registration fee, but he still needs R65 000 for accommodation and tuition

Jabulani Sibande and Marvin Orr recently passed their matric with flying colours, but do not have funds for their tuition fees and accommodation at university.

Jabulani Sibande, a former pupil at Khula-Sakhile Secondary School, obtained two distinctions in History and English.

He grew up in Sakhile and lost his father, who was the breadwinner, at an early age.

His mother fell ill and was diagnosed with depression after his father’s passing.

He had to find a job so he could support his family financially.

While he was in high school at Jandrell Secondary School he found a job at Earlybird as a chicken catcher.

“I would go to school during the day and work at night,” he said.

It had a negative impact on his school work and as a result he failed Grade 12 in 2010.

He continued working at Earlybird after failing matric and was not employed permanently.

He found another job, but got retrenched after three months.

“This motivated me to go back to school and do my matric again,” Sibande said.

He went to Khula-Sakhile Secondary School in 2014, but could not repeat Grade 12.

“They told me that I had to do Grade 11 again, but that did not discourage me,” he said.

He said he worked hard and became the top achiever in the school last year.

Jabulani Sibande is currently doing a Bachelor of Arts in law at the University of Witwatersrand.

“I managed to raise R14 000 through donations and paid the registration fee, as well as the accommodation for two months in advance,” Sibande said. He still needs R50 000 for his tuition and accommodation for this year.

Marvin Orr who is currently studying Electrical Engineering at the University at Johannesburg also needs funds for his tuition and accommodation.

Community members donated towards his registration fee, but he still needs R65 000 for accommodation and tuition.

“My mother is unemployed and my uncle is the only person with a job at home, but he is not permanently employed,” Orr said.

According to him, he has always loved school and enjoyed studying.

However, last year was a difficult year because he was stressed that he will not be able to further his studies because of lack of funds.

He said the teachers encouraged him to work hard so he will get good marks and get a bursary.

“I obtained good results with three distinctions in Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Sciences, but did not get a bursary,” he said.

Both of them want to continue studying, but they cannot do that without paying.
