Lukas gets his permanent number

This marathon was his 10th and as a result he received a permanent number.

Lukas van der Merwe received his permanent number when he ran the Kosmos 3 in 1 Marathon in Secunda on 7 March.

This marathon was his 10th and as a result he received a permanent number.

He also has permanent numbers for the Comrades Marathon and the Two Oceans Marathon, just to name a few.

Van der Merwe began participating in the Comrades Marathon in 2001.

This came after he attended a Comrades Marathon in 2000 and was motivated to join.

His first marathon was from Pietermaritzburg to Durban and took him about 10 hours to finish.

He also joined the Standerton Marathon Club in 2001.

According to his wife, Heidi van der Merwe, Lukas practiced every day preparing for his first Comrades Marathon.

“He ran about 10km daily as part of his preparation,” Heidi said.

His love for taking part in marathons grew and he took part in more marathons.

His wife joined him in 2008.

“I was tired of waiting for him at the finish line,” she also said.

She began participating in 5km fun runs and eventually got used to it.

Lukas is an electrical foreman at Earlybird and has been working there for more than 10 years.

He has since motivated more people to join the marathon club.

They both live hectic lives, but always make time for gardening.

“We enjoy gardening, that is what we do to unwind,” Heidi said.
