Woman admitted to hospital after taking rubber bullet to the head

The woman was shortly thereafter arrested for public violence.

Two women were arrested after a community protest in Thuthukani on 23 March.

One of them sustained an injury after she was shot in the head with a rubber bullet.

She was taken to the hospital and another woman accompanied her.

The police arrested both of them after the injured woman received medical care at the Standerton Hospital.

They were released on R300 bail the same day.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) bailed them out.

They were charged with public violence and appeared in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court the following day.

The case against them was withdrawn.

The Thuthukani community took to the streets, alleging that Tutuka Power Station does not hire locals, but only migrant workers.

Sanco appealed to the community to follow the correct procedures when they want to march.

“Community members must get their facts straight before acting,” Mr Nicholas Selepe, Lekwa zonal convener, said.

He said people who organise a march must take responsibility as to what could happen.
