Community demands jobs

Angry community members demand employment from the municipality.

A group of disgruntled Sakhile residents gathered outside one of the municipal buildings in town, demanding jobs, last Friday.

They were previously employed for a project that was doing general work within Lekwa.

More than 70 people worked on this project named Phezukomkhono.

Their duties included filling potholes on the roads, cleaning municipal buildings, burying bodies of people without families, assisting in community funerals and campaigning for the ANC.

They worked on this project for two years and their contracts were renewed every six months.

They were told that the project was ending December last year, but there will be a new project in January.

They were told to apply, but not all of them will be employed, because only 40 people were needed.
