Residents feel neglected by Lekwa Municipality

An elderly woman in Protea Streets has been experiencing numerous problems at her home, regarding electricity, water and sanitation.

An elderly woman has allegedly reported numerous problems with regard to electricity, water and sanitation, to the Lekwa Municipality and nothing has been done thus far.

Ms Mamsy Labuschagne has a RDP house at the back of her old four-room house.

She alleged the municipality moved the electric box to the RDP house and told her they were going to demolish the old house.

She was left without electricity in her house.

Some of her children stay in the RDP and she stays in the old house.

After the municipality connected the power box in the RDP, the family connected electricity so she can still have electricity in the house.

She is also experiencing some problems with water supply.

The water pressure of the tap outside is low and water trickles out slowly.

“We have to wait for four hours to fill a bucket of water,” she said.

Her toilet also has a problem with flushing.

Each time they want to flush the toilet, they have to get water from the tap.

“I had to hire a plumber to fix the pipes and he charged me R150.”

The plumber connected a pipe to the toilet, dug a hole outside the toilet and inserted the pipe into the hole.

Every time they flush the toilet the waste goes down the hole.

Ms Labuschagne said that area gets smelly when it is hot.

She also said they reported a leaking pipe outside the RDP to the municipality, but also in vain.

Ms Labuschagne is Mr Jack Johnson’s neighbour, who also has electricity and water problems.

Mr Johnson’s story was published in the Standerton Ibis last week, 31 October.
