Illegal trading increase in Standerton

The municipality and the hawkers committee want to find ways of dealing with illegal trading because of the increasing number of illegal traders.

Illegal traders are mushrooming everywhere, not only in the Central Business District (CBD), but also in the industrial area.

In a previous article published in the Standerton Advertiser on 15 August, the municipal manager, Mr Linda Tshabalala, said hawkers are only allowed to trade in demarcated areas.

According to him spot-checks are done as well.

“We will have a meeting with the hawkers committee to discuss illegal trading,” Mr Tshabalala also said.

According to Mr Michael Ngcongo, secretary of the Sisonke Hawkers Organisation, their members trade in the CBD.

“We have approached some hawkers trading in Walter Sisulu Drive at the graveyard and they did not want to join the organisation.

“Members of the organisation are aware of the places they should trade in.

“We will meet with the municipality to discuss suitable places where we can all trade and find solutions to deal with illegal traders,” Mr Ngcongo said.

He also said they are aware of the hawkers trading in the industrial area, but they have not approached them.

Mr Gavin Barbarini, plant manager at Noble, would not comment on the hawkers trading across the street from Noble, because they are not on their premises.
