You pay, I pray

Victim told to place money in a field for it to multiply after praying.

A 32-year-old Ugandan citizen, Dennis Wakida, appeared in the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of theft and extortion.

The case was postponed to 8 May to allow for further investigation.

Police spokesman for Ermelo, Capt Carla Prinsloo, said Wakida led unsuspecting victims to believe that upon paying him sums of money, he would pray for them so that they could become wealthy and successful.

It is believed Wakida also told a complainant that his forefathers had told him he (the complainant) should open a business.

He convinced his victim to place money in a field so that it could multiply.

Wakida then pocketed the money and nothing ever came of the promises.

Wakida went so far as to distribute pamphlets to advertise his “services”.
