On full alert during Easter weekend

The department will not tolerate operators who transgress the law and will ensure that all those who contravene the transport act, face the full might of the law.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport was out in full force during this Easter Weekend to ensure that all public transport operators abided by road rules.

A total of 176 public transport vehicles that include among others, taxis, meter taxis and buses, have been impounded since the beginning of the Easter weekend between 17 and 18 April, for operating for rewards without an operating licence, which is in contravention of the Transport Act.

The impounded vehicles have been issued with notices and they can only be released once a fine of between R2 000 and R2 500, depending on the offence committed, has been paid.

The department urged all public transport operators to ensure that they abide by the laws of the road to avoid any accidents and being penalized.
