STANDERTON – The Standerton Magistrate’s Court recently sentenced Paul David Matine (42) to pay R10 000 or serve 12 months in prison of which R5 000 or six months were suspended for five years after driving under the influence of alcohol and without a license.

His vehicle was driving towards oncoming traffic on a public road and nearly collided with an oncoming police vehicle.

The police tried to pull the vehicle off the road, but the driver sped off. They pursued him and he stopped a few metres away from the crime scene.

The police asked him for his driver’s license, which he failed to produce.

He was taken to the Standerton Hospital for a breathalyzer test and it showed that he was over the allowed limit. A case of driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license was opened.

Const Jabulani Sithole of Sakhile Detectives investigated the case. The police said they will not hesitate to issue a J534 order with a R5 000 fine in such cases.
