Rain floods squatters’ houses

A small community of Ward 9, behind the Standerton prison, needs help because of heavy rain that threaten to flood their houses.

This community moved to the location after being evicted from a farm just outside Standerton.

They apparently had nowhere to go, so they decided to squat in the area.

It has no electricity and more than three families share one tap.

They want the Lekwa Municipality to develop the area after the past week’s rain swamped the section.

“Our houses are flooded, the children have no place to sleep,” Ms Pauline Motloung said.

The streets are inaccessible because of the rain.

“In case of an emergency, no vehicles can enter the area.”

The community alleged their councillor does not address their problems.

“The ward councillor never comes to inspect the place and when we call him, he does not answer our calls,” another resident said..

“They want us to vote, but they do not do anything to address our problems.

“I am not going to vote because the new government regime is not doing anything to improve my situation.

“I have had enough and dying seems like a better option at this time because I know I would be in a better place,” Mr Johannes Msomi, an elderly resident, said. The community also has no garbage removal services.

They use pit toilets to relieve themselves and parents are forced to worry every time the children go to the toilet.

“The toilets are dangerous,” Ms Anna Ngwenya said.

“The freedom we think we have is not for everyone because no one really cares about the poor,” Mr Msomi also said.
