School receives award

Mpumalanga Province had 134 registrations and the school was the only one to receive a Green Flag.

Vulingqondo Primary School situated outside Ermelo recently received a Green Flag award for its participation in the Eco-schools competition.

Mpumalanga Province had 134 registrations and the school was the only one to receive a Green Flag.

Eco-schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to make sustainability an integral part of school life.

The school has been participating in the Eco-schools competition for the past four years. The competition addresses a healthy environment within schools based on curriculum learning and the community.

Vulingqondo participated in three themes: healthy living, local and global issues as well as community and heritage. Learners had to record the daily temperature, rainfall, and wind direction as part of the project.

The school principal, Mr Sipho Bota, was delighted with the award. He did, however, raise concerns that the school is not fenced and that intruders gain access to the school with no difficulty, leaving their vegetable garden and buildings vulnerable to theft.
