In improving road safety in the district, 5673 traffic fines were issued during October.

During the operation 15 arrests for violation of traffic rules were made, 359 un-roadworthy vehicles were discontinued; two people were arrested for drunken driving and nine for speeding.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe said it is disturbing that the road carnage is affecting the lives of innocent people.

“It is about time drivers prioritise road safety, especially when transporting people,” said Shongwe.

He said by punishing reckless drivers, government will be sending a strong message to all road users that road safety should not be compromised.
