Murdered Mapule’s family wants answers

Mr Rudolph Ngwenya will appear in court again on 16 January.

BETHAL – The family of Ms Mapule Jaquiline Thekiso (48) wants nothing but the truth about how she was murdered and why.

Ms Thekiso’s body was recovered in a dam in eMzinoni in November, several days after she disappeared in Vosman.

Her brother, Mr Sam Thekiso, said his sister was missing for over a month and they are saddened by the manner in which she died.

He said they will not find closure until the suspect tells the truth and confesses to what he had done.

“We are devastated and feel so helpless. However, we hope and believe that justice will be served.

“This guy must rot in jail.”

Mr Thekiso thanked the group of women who were picketing outside the Bethal Magistrate’s Court where a 28-year-old suspect, Mr Rudolph Ngwenya, appeared on Tuesday, 7 January.

He was arrested in Calcutta near Hazyview in December for being in possession of Ms Thekiso’s stolen car.

The disgruntled women handed over their memorandum to Ms Eljo van Eeden, court manager.

In the memorandum, the women demanded that the court deny bail to Mr Ngwenya.

Ms Jabulile Dladla, march convener, said the court must have no mercy on suspects in cases involving gender-based violence, as pronounced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

“We are here to urge the court not to grant bail to the suspect.

“If he is found guilty, he must be given a harsh punishment.

“We stand in solidarity with all victims of gender-based violence, we will continue fighting this battle until we win.

“We are calling on men to stop this cruel killing of women.”

Ms Van Eeden commended the women for taking a stand against gender-based violence. She said the court will do its job to ensure that justice is always served.

Mr Ngwenya’s case was postponed to 16 January.
