Kickboxers from Secunda and Kriel excel at Korean martial arts

Although these students were up against the country’s best, they obtained 17 gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals.

SECUNDA – Fighters of the Warrior Kickboxing Club of Secunda and Kriel won numerous gold medals at the South African Korean Martial Arts Association (SAKMAA) national championship held on 3 and 4 August in the Madiba Hall in Potchefstroom.

The members who took part were Sensei George van Diggelen, Elijah Sobaren, Annette Botha, Clifford van Diggelen, Christopher Sharp, Yentl van Diggelen, Pieter Geldenhuys, Barry Gous, John-Henry Kaschula, Nicolene Nell Jonathan van der Merwe and Stephan Sertfontein.

They competed in combat weapons sparring, point sparring and continuous sparring.

Yentl van Diggelen, Nell and Sharp also took part in the traditional form.

Although these students were up against the country’s best, they obtained 17 gold medals, five silver medals and four bronze medals.

A team will now be selected from the contestants at the national championship to represent South Africa abroad.

The Warriors also took part in the Mpumalanga championship in Songahm Taekwondo the weekend prior. This championship was held in the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda on 27 July.

The club members who took part, are Danielle Janse van Rensburg, Jonathan Janse van Rensburg, Christopher Sharp, Barry Gous, Chris Fick, John-Henry Kaschula, Yentl van Diggelen, Sensei George van Diggelen, Elijah Sobaren, Stephan Serfontein, Alma Black and Jaco Fourie.

They collectively obtained 13 gold medals, six silver medals and five bronze medals.
