Gogo from eMba lives in a pool of sewage

Contractor accused of not doing a proper job in house connections

eMBALENHLE – Gogo Agnes Mathebula was left with no other choice but to vacate her house in Extension 18 after it flooded with sewage.

The 70-year-old said the problem began a long time ago, but on Friday she woke up to a pool of raw sewage all over her yard.

There was nothing she could do as she is living with a disability.

Gogo Mathebula has lost count of how many times she reported the problem to Govan Mbeki Municipality.

She had to take her grandchildren, who she was taking care of at the time, back to their parents due to this problem.

“This was affecting their health.

“They often had stomach bugs.

“I am also not well, because of this.

“Sometimes it floods into my house to such an extend that I can not get out of my bed.

“I do not know what to do anymore.”

Gogo Mathebula feels hopeless as she has tried everything to fix the problem.

She used her pension money to fix the house so sewage spills would not seep inside, but it did not help.

Her neighbours blamed the contractors and said they have failed to connect the sewerage lines correctly and now they sit with this problem.

Ms Annita Mkhwebane, DA PR councillor, said it is sad that people are living in such conditions and called on the mayor to intervene.

Ms Thandiwe Zulu, Ward councillor, is aware of the problem and reported the matter to the contractor.

She said she will by all means try to fix the problem soonest.
