Van Schaik reaps medals at the Mpumalanga Open Combat Rifle Champs

Van Schaik won 12 gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze medal

SECUNDA – Protea marksman and police weapons expert, W/O Louwrens van Schaik, is the winner of the Mpumalanga Open Combat Rifle Championship.

The Mpumalanga Combat Rifle Association hosted the competition at the Dusty Ranch shooting range at Barberton from 13 to 15 June.

The national air force’s tour team also took part in the inter-service match against Mpumalanga’s A team for whom Van Schaik was competing, at this event.

Van Schaik won 12 gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze medal.

He was also an official at the event and had to juggle his shooting in the Mpumalanga A team with his duties as official.

The event began on the Friday with an individual shooting championship, while the mixed teams and unit competitions took place on the Saturday.

Van Schaik took the first place in all his individual X-Class events.

He received gold in the X-Class (scope) for the 100m rapid shooting, the 100m Macarena, 200m sustained fire, 300m rapid shooting, 300m mixed grill (various targets), rapids totals and the X-Class day totals, as well as a gold medal for veterans in all classes, and the best overall day total in all the classes.

In the unit competition, Van Schaik competed for the Nelspruit Military Sports Club (NMSC) who took a silver medal in the sentry match and a gold in the snap match.

His mixed team named Gat Sonder End obtained a silver medal in the sentry match.

The Mixed Blue team won a bronze medal in the sentry match and in the provincial team match, Van Schaik’s team won a silver medal.

He was also awarded a gold medal for the best range officer.

Van Schaik is heading to Waterval Boven this weekend for the Long Distance Teaser presented by the South African Arms and Ammunition Collectors Association.

He will be competing in several tournaments during July before the South African championship in Bloemfontein in August.
