eMbalenhle’s sewage woes continue

Residents want Council to deal with sewerage problems

eMBALENHLE – Mr Sakhile Mahlangu, newly appointed MMC for the Department of Water and Sanitation has a huge task to perform as sewerage woes in the area continues.

Almost every section in the area has sewer leakages or drains overflowing.

Residents said this problem is posing a health hazard and is devaluating the area.

They complained that in some areas the roads are blocked and put their lives at risk, because ambulances, police vehicles and fire trucks cannot get to the area where they are needed.

“We heard that there is a national intervention to deal with this, but we do not see any change.

“People are living in pigsties and it is unfortunate that the Govan Mbeki Municipality is not doing anything about it.”

Dr Zweli Mkhize, former minister of Cogta, told the residents in August that the provincial government committed to a budget of R53-million towards addressing the sewage spillages, specifically in eMbalenhle.

During his first visit in August, the residents expressed their frustrations over sewage spillages in the area and told him that they have had enough of the raw sewage in the area.

They complained that raw sewage often flows into the streets and they suspect that blocked underground pipes are to be blamed.

The newspaper contacted Govan Mbeki Municipality’s spokesman, Mr Benzi Soko, for comment but nothing was received at the time of going to print.
