Disgruntled councillors call for special meeting

Opposition parties unite to remove the mayor

eMBALENHLE – Councillors who boycotted the recent Govan Mbeki Municipal council meeting, wrote a letter to Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, Speaker of council, requesting him to convene a special council meeting which will specifically deal with the motion of no confidence in Ms Thandi Ngxonono, the executive mayor.

These councillors, including the 12 disgruntled ANC councillors, did not show up at the council meeting on Thursday, 21 February.

The few ANC councillors who attended the meeting did not form a quorum and Mr Zuma had to adjourn the meeting.

The councillors requested Mr Zuma to call a council sitting in terms of Section 29 of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act on Monday, 4 March.

The councillors stated that they had three critical issues to be considered at the special council meeting.

These are:
– The unbecoming conduct of Ms Thandi Ngxonono which has brought the council into disrepute and is making the ANC campaign difficult.
– The appointment of the acting mayor or chairman.
– The approval of all outstanding compliance items, in keeping with the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), and to avoid further negative and adverse findings by the auditor general which they are obliged and duty bound to perform.

Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, Sapromo president, said though they wrote a letter to Mr Zuma on Wednesday, 27 February he had not yet responded.

Mr Zuma confirmed that he received two letters and said he will respond to the councillors’ requests soon.

“I will respond to them and will advise them on how their request should have been submitted because it was not done in the proper way.”
