eMBALENHLE – A woman was allegedly raped by eight men in the presence of her boyfriend at Mandela Section.
It is alleged that the suspects forcefully entered the house and found the couple inside.
The suspects fired a shot, then grabbed the woman and raped her.
Police launched an investigation and managed to arrest one suspect. The others are still at large.
Const Busi Mthethwa, police spokesman, said eMbalenhle is becoming dangerous for women, especially young girls, as incidents of rape involving victims under the age of 18, are increasing at an alarming rate.
“The rapid increase of sexual crimes towards children are a concern and we urge parents to be vigilant.”
Const Mthethwa added that children are often raped by people known to them, such as family members or neighbours.
“In a recent incident, a minor was raped by a 14-year-old boy while they were playing in a dam at Extension 26.
We urge parents to be cautious and to always know the whereabouts of their minor daughters. Report any suspicion of child abuse to the police immediately.
“More often parents take too long to report such crimes, because it is committed by people close to them.”
She said the police are working around the clock to ensure the safety of children at home and at school.
“We will conduct various campaigns at schools to raise awareness about sexual abuse and harassment,” Const Mthethwa concluded.
