Cyclist injured when knocked off of his bike near Secunda

The cyclist flew through the air and hit the ground on the right side of the road. Ms Nortje said the brake marks on the road are about 80m long.

SECUNDA – A cyclist was knocked off his bike on the tar road past Trichardt Crushers, between the dumpsite and Twistdraai Mines this morning, 14 December.

According to Ms Alma Nortjé who was in a car behind the cyclist and his friend, a driver in a bakkie overtook her car on a solid white line and sped past at about 120km per hour.

The cyclists were riding next to each other.

“One of the cyclists (the victim) was struck by the bakkie that overtook them. The bakkie hit him with the left front side of his car,” said Ms Nortje.

The cyclist flew through the air and hit the ground on the right side of the road.

Ms Nortje said the brake marks on the road are about 80m long.

She said the motorist jumped out and began shouting at the cyclist.

Ms Nortje phoned the ambulance and police.

The driver of the bakkie was in a hurry to go to church, so Ms Nortje took a photo of his driver’s license.

“The cyclist’s cell phone was broken so I notified his wife, and reported everyone’s details to the police.”

Langamed ambulances took the injured cyclist to the Mediclinic Highveld in Trichardt.

Mr Desmond Matthee, a member of the Sasol Cycling Club, asked that all road users must be respectful to each other.

“Be safe, be visible and stick to the rules of the road.”
