113 Illegal miners arrested in connection with illegal gold mining in Evander

A helicopter of the mine was also used in the clampdown operation on the illegal miners.

EVANDER – The police arrested more than a hundred people on Friday, 8 June in connection with illegal gold mining and trespassing on mine properties.

The 113 arrested people were crowding the small Evander Police Station on Friday as the police officials compiled the paperwork.

Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, the spokesman of Evander Police, said the illegal miners, known as zama zamas, were arrested by police members from the Crime Prevention Unit from various stations in the cluster and K9 unit.

A helicopter of the mine was also used in the clampdown operation on the illegal miners.

“They searched for dangerous weapons, drugs and illegal immigrants and closed down illegal taverns,” Sgt Mbuli said.

Capt Michak Mhlanga, the head of the Evander Visible Police Unit, said Evander needs to be a safe place rather than a no-go area because of crime.
