Mpumalanga Mental Health Society appreciates Sharen Wickens’ service as volunteer

Sharen Wickens retires from Mpumalanga Mental Health's committee.

SECUNDA – Staff from the Mpumalanga Mental Health Society (MMHS) spoiled Ms Sharen Wickens who has been involved with the society since 2012.

She was part of the local management committee of the Secunda branch and was later elected for the provincial management board.

“She showed the true meaning of being a volunteer as she dedicated her time, expertise, support, guidance and love towards the organisation and people with disabilities,” said Ms Karen Asia, director of MMHS.

“As a non-profit organisation, it is often difficult to identify volunteers who are passionate to help others and Mental Health was truly fortunate to have Sharen.”

Ms Wickens is a retired major from the air force and serves on many other committees as well.

She recently resigned from the provincial management committee, but will remain a member of the Secunda branch committee.

Ms Wickens held positions as provincial treasurer, provincial secretary and vice chairman on the provincial committee.

She shared her knowledge and expertise with Mental Health’s social workers and was actively involved in fundraising events, as well as awareness and marketing of services provided to people with disabilities.

Mental Health renders services to people with disabilities in the form of counselling, support and advocacy and lobbying for their rights.

“We will truly miss Sharen on the provincial committee and we would like to thank her for her efforts and inputs at Mental Health.

“She has made a difference in our organisation and we will be forever greatful for the footprints she imprinted here,” said Ms Asia.

Mental Health’s Secunda branch has two social workers and the community can contact them if they need help for people with disabilities.

The social workers are Mr Edward Moutlana and Ms Petunia Masango who can be contacted at 081 454 4288 or 081 544 0920 respectively.
