Blood service awards loyal controllers

MegChem wins award for collecting most units of blood.

SECUNDA – Teksa Blood Service hosted its controller function at Graceland Hotel, Casino and Country Club on Friday, 9 March during which the South African National Blood Service awarded businesses, schools and organisations that made it possible for them to host blood drives.

MegChem won the award for the company that collected the most units of blood during blood drives, and Ms Thea Schmidt accepted the award on behalf of the company.

The second place was shared by the Mall at eMba and Ikhethelo Secondary School.

Sr Sanet Kalse from Teksa Blood Service said one out of every four people will need a blood transfusion in their lifetime.

Teksa Blood Service reached their target for 2017, but Mpumalanga did not. However Mpumalanga managed to collect 99 per cent of their target.

Ms Dot Prinsloo, Public Relations Practitioner at Teksa Blood Service, spoke about the importance of donating blood and shared Mr Dieter Uken, a local musician’s, story.

Mr Uken said he was diagnosed with colon cancer last year. He had a brain tumour removed a few years ago and will have to go for chemotherapy sessions soon to fight the colon cancer.

“Thanks to all blood donors. If it were not for you, I would not have been standing here,” said Mr Uken.

The blood service will be hosting a blood donor day on Wednesday, 21 March and the national blood service aims at collecting 4 000 units on this day.

All satellites in Secunda, Kriel and Bethal will be open and Ms Prinsloo urged people to support them.

To donate blood, visit the Secunda branch in Horwood Street or contact them at 017 631 1652.
