Rata experiences shortage of clothes and food, needs your help

Charity organisation's food cupboards are empty and have to send the needy away.

The charity organisation Rata, which means love in Sotho, currently faces a huge shortage of food and clothes.

This organisation in Secunda’s main aim is child protection and family care.

Rata’s responsibilities include protecting and safeguarding children against abuse, new beginnings through foster care and adoptions, enhancing the quality of life of all people, the implementation of programmes to strengthen family bonds, uplifting communities through alleviating poverty, life skills projects, literacy projects and awareness campaigns.

For the past two months Rata had to send people away empty handed or with very little because they were running low on food.

“The demand for food is always higher before Christmas and we now do not have any food left,” said Ms Sonja Smit, social worker at Rata. Our foster parents also need food to take care of the children in their care. Many foster parents also struggle financially and are dependent on donations to buy food.”

Rata gives food to about 500 people monthly.

These people battle financially and Rata gives food for a few months and then do house visits to check if these people are trying to find jobs.

“We want to act in a preventive manner,” said Ms Smit.

She urged the community to open their hearts and donate clothes and non-perishable food.

“We cannot use clothes that are full of holes or are dirty, the clothes must still be usable,” said Ms Susan Bouwer, Rata’s secretary. If you want to support Rata, contact them at 017 631 1631.
