Vermeulens complain about Evander Hospital

Mr Vermeulen is currently being treated in the Steve Biko Hospital

EVANDER – Mr Piet Vermeulen is upset over the poor service he had recently received from Evander Hospital.

He was rushed to this hospital by his wife, Ms Hannetjie Vermeulen, when he began complaining about burning pain in his chest area.

According to Ms Vermeulen they had been at the hospital from 8am to 5pm on Tuesday, 19 November.

A doctor had been to see Mr Vermeulen and was not seen for the rest of the day.

He was put on a drip and a blood test was done.

“The tests came back negative and my husband was sent home with Ibuprofen and Paracetamol,” Ms Vermeulen said.

“I rushed my husband back to Evander Hospital at 3am the next morning as his condition was not getting any better.

“I went to fetch his file and was told that it could not be found.

“The doctor came to see him after 6am and asked where the file was and could not do anything without his file.

“This means all the results of his previous tests and the doctor’s reports had just vanished,” Ms Vermeulen said.

Mr Vermeulen had had enough at 8am.

He felt that his condition was worsening and he needed medical treatment immediately.

His wife rushed him through to the Medi-Clinic Highveld where the doctors confirmed he had evolving myocardial damage.

According to Ms Vermeulen, the doctor said Mr Vermeulen had a blood clot going towards his heart and that if he were a few minutes later, the results could have been worse, even resulting in death.

The Ridge Times contacted the Evander Hospital two weeks ago for a response, but had not received any at the time of going to the press on Monday.

Mr Vermeulen has been admitted to the Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria where he is undergoing tests and treatment.

He said: “I think that if my condition was detected the first time that I went to the Evander Hospital, then the effect would not have been so severe.”

“We received nothing but bad services from the staff and the security at Evander Hospital,” Ms Vermeulen said.

“I will not be dropping this matter and will be taking it further.”
