eMba residents demand to pay Eskom directly

The office of the public protector has advised locals to make a community resolution and to draft a petition with signatures that they want to pay Eskom directly.

This came after furious residents raised their concerns over high municipal bills and that the municipality is failing to provide good services during an outreach by the office of the public protector.

Locals believe Govan Mbeki Municipality is billing them too high so they can settle their Eskom debt of about R4-m.

Locals lambasted the municipality over poor service delivery, the sewage crisis in the area, RDP houses and the allocation of stands.

They urged the public protector to investigate municipal officials and politicians who allegedly sell stands and RDP houses illegally.

“RDP houses in Green Field are occupied by people who drive expensive cars.

“We wonder how a person who drives such an expensive car, can qualify for an RDP house.

“As for the stands, the municipality never allocates stands to residents, only to business people and municipal officials,” said a resident.

eMbalenhle Police Station and the Evander and Secunda Magistrate’ Courts were also on residents’ list of grievances.

Mr Collen Nkosi said the police station is not capable of providing service to the increasing number of eMbalenhle residents.

He said this leads to some important cases being neglected by the police.
