Records show man is dead and cannot open bank account

“No one can explain to me what is going on”

KINROSS – Mr Richard Nkosi is struggling to open an account or get a new identity document, because the Department of Home Affairs’ records show he is dead.

He only realised when he wanted to open a new account at a bank.

“When I arrived at the bank, I completed all the forms but after they had taken my fingerprints, they informed me to go to Home Affairs to collect my death certificate,” said the frustrated Mr Nkosi.

He was informed at the Secunda branch that they did not have his death certificate and could not understand what the problem was.

The officer asked him to register for another ID, but instead of getting a new ID, he was informed that it was not approved.

Out of frustration he went to other banks, but was again told that he could not open an account because he was supposed to be dead.

The Department of Home Affairs asked him to reapply for an ID, but in vain.

“It is frustrating, because nobody can help me,” said Mr Nkosi.

He is afraid that he might lose his job because his employer keeps asking him to open a bank account.

The Ridge Times have tried to contact the Department of Home Affairs several times without getting any response and ended up reaching the office of the director general, Mr Mkuseli Apleni, on Monday, 20 June who promised to attend to the matter.
