Illegal dumpsters to face prosecution

Govan Mbeki Municipality wants to deal with illegal dumping in the area.

eMBALENHLE – The Govan Mbeki Municipality said illegal dumping is costly and has a negative impact on people’s health, the environment, the landscape, the value of property and criminal activities.

Mr Bheki Kubheka, acting head of Communication and Marketing, said the culture of littering and dumping garbage next to the road has increased in the area.

He said motorists are often seen throwing rubbish out of their car windows.

Almost every section in the area has an illegal dumping site with a bad stench which is apparently caused by animal carcasses that are dumped at these illegal dumping sites.

Council urged residents to stop dumping waste in open spaces, along main roads, on street corners and in storm water drains.

Residents are requested to do the following:

· Keep waste in proper containers i.e. black plastic bags or refuse bins.

· Store waste in refuse containers in your yards until they are collected by municipal crews.

· Stop littering and dumping waste in all areas mentioned above.

· Report offenders to the municipality for prosecution.

· Residents need to keep their yards neat and clean and have vegetable gardens.

· Discourage or avoid the burning of waste.

· Recycle waste e.g. papers, boxes, plastic, tins.

· Use food waste (left overs) as manure in food gardens.

· Bury dead animals instead of throwing them in open spaces to rot.

· Keep pavements clean daily and pick up paper around fences.

“Failure to comply or abide by the mentioned waste management requirements, will result in prosecution.

“The little that you do in your corner will make a huge difference,” said Mr Kubheka.
