Sasol and Govan Mbeki Municipality launch point duty officer initiative

Mayor says: “Since the beginning of the project, we have experienced smooth running of the traffic in the area and hope it will continue to add value.”

eMBALENHLE – There was no traffic congestion during the Sasol shutdown for the first time in history, because of the good job done by the traffic point duty officers.

This was according to Ms Maureen Mboshane, Sasol Secunda vice president of Public Affairs, during Sasol and the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s official launch of the traffic point duty officer job creation initiative on Wednesday, 15 October at the eMbalenhle Sasol Recreation Club.

Ms Mboshane said this joint initiative formed part of Sasol’s continued efforts to invest meaningfully to the success and development in the area with the goal of enhancing people’s life experience.

“We are extremely pleased to have created 35 job opportunities for previously unemployed local youths through this initiative.

“We promote road safety and alleviating traffic congestion in and around Secunda, eMbalenhle, even as far as Charl Cilliers.

“This project has already greatly improved the traffic flow in these areas and with point duty officers posted at specific intersections at primary schools, the safety of our young pupils are enhanced.”

Ms Mboshane said Sasol Secunda remains a responsible social investor in Mpumalanga and that the goal is to contribute to broader societal interests through to the community social responsibility and Ikusasa initiatives.

“We have identified job creation projects, such as this project, that will assist Government address and mitigate socio-economic challenges experienced in our

communities, by providing a platform for business and employment opportunities for the local youth.

“We remain committed to taking hands with our partner, Govan Mbeki Municipality, and to continue to work hard to sustainably uplift and empower our youth so that they may be able to contribute positively and thrive in the area.”

The Govan Mbeki Municipality recruited and trained local youths before posting them to specific intersections around Secunda, eMbalenhle, Kinross, Bethal, Trichardt

and Charl Cilliers and Sasol sponsored uniforms and provided monthly remunerations.

The point duty officers currently work five days a week in two hour work shifts, during morning and afternoon peak hours and have greatly improved traffic flow to the benefit of all community members.

Ms Lindi Masina, executive mayor, commended the relationship between Council and Sasol.

She said the partnership has contributed a lot to change and transforming lives.

“Since the beginning of the project, we have experienced smooth running of the traffic in the area and hope it will continue to add value.

“It has also provided young people with an opportunity to contribute towards shaping the workforce of this municipality.

“This project is a constant reminder to all that South Africa is a country of possibilities.”

About 35 youths received certificates for conducting and controlling traffic in the municipal area.
