Be cautious this winter when starting a fire

Fire and Rescue Service gives winter safety tips.

The Govan Mbeki Municipal Fire and Rescue Services warn residents about the danger of fires during the winter.

They said the following safety tips can save lives:

Causes of fires:

· Overloading of electrical appliances and illegal connections.

· Cigarette butts discarded carelessly.

· Leaving a switched-on gas or paraffin stove unattended.

· Overheated cooking oil.

· Children playing with matches.

· Faulty electrical blankets and heaters.

Fire safety tips:

· Prevent fires from starting.

· Never leave candles unattended.

· Keep matches and lighters away from children.

· Do not connect electricity illegally.

· Cooking stoves and heaters should never be left unattended.

· Smoking in bed is dangerous.

· Have more than one escape doors in your home.

· If a fire breaks out, warn people in your home to get out.
