Athletic club hosts heritage marathon in Leandra
Musa Mnisi from the Sasol Marathon Club was the overall and junior winner, while Diana Prinsloo from the Secunda Marathon Club is the overall winner of the women. .
The Leandra Athletic Club held the Heritage Month Marathon on September 25.
Different running clubs from across the provinces participated in the 10km race, including prominent radio personalities.
According to June Mahlangu, the slow-growing road running club has existed informally for the past three years before it was officially launched last year.
The Leandra Athletic Club is now formally affiliated with the Mpumalanga Athletic Association.
Mahlangu said their club membership is currently 18 members and their vision is to unearth and develop running talent in Leandra, to bring the community together through athletics.
“This race was also a recruitment drive for community members to join as we invited potential sponsors to financially support the club.
“One of the requirements for a club’s existence is that the club members must attend and participate in the races hosted by other clubs.
“The club is also required to host its own race,” said Mahlangu.
He thanked the businesses and individuals who contributed to the success of the marathon.
