House for mom of twins with cancer in eMzinoni

The mother told the mayor that their safety was compromised when criminals attacked them at night. The criminals stole some of their belongings, so Zuma promised to fence their yard for their safety.

Lwandile and Lwanele Mkhonza, 16-year-old twins from eMzinoni, suffer from a rare autosomal recessive disorder known as xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) that leads to aggressive skin and other types of cancers and, according to the Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Mandla Ndlovu, their mother, Phumzile, will get a house next month.

Ndlovu said this at the Mpumalanga Premier imbizo held at the Risko Fakude Stadium in eMbalenhle on September 7.

Ndlovu and the Govan Mbeki Municipality executive mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, visited the Mkhonza family last month and promised to build them a house.

The mother told Zuma their safety was compromised when criminals attacked them at night. The criminals stole some of their belongings, so Zuma promised to fence their yard for their safety.

Ridge Times published a story recently about the twins and their mother, Phumzile, who battled to keep things afloat.

The boys suffer from tumours on their tongues. One has lost both eyes and the left part of his nose, while the other lost one of his eyes to cancer. Both had several operations.

Last month, Phumzile told Ridge Times they needed a house because they lived in a two-room shack, and she was worried because summer was here and the twins were not supposed to be exposed to heat.
