Bookworm donates more than 1 000 books to Cullinan Library

Local resident Rene Koeleman is a huge fan of reading.

Cullinan resident Rene Koeleman is a bookworm and fan of reading who serves many because of her love for books.

Koeleman had collected a sizable library over the years on topics of interest, novels from high-end authors and many other craft and DIY books.

At a certain point, she realised there were many books she would never read again, so she decided to declutter her library.

She packed the books into crates, boxes and bags and then contacted the local councillor, Johannes Bekker, to guide her on donating the books to the Cullinan Library.

Koeleman took about four loads to the library for sorting, stamping and registering for the locals to enjoy.

The librarians were in heaven to have more than 1 000 books and eagerly perused the stacks in front of them.

Bekker said reading helped children improve their cognitive skills, inspired them, and developed their critical thinking skills. This donation from Koeleman will create equal opportunities for young and old.

“Early exposure to books helps children develop vocabulary and language skills. Unfortunately, thousands of learners and adults lack basic literacy and numeracy skills.”

Bekker believed seniors who read often enjoyed more than just a good story.

“Scientific studies have found many benefits of reading for older adults. These include everything from reducing stress and enhancing sleep to improving memory circuits, sharpening decision-making and possibly even delaying the onset of dementia.

“We have so many retired residents who will be able to find old and new Afrikaans and English novels from local and international authors. It is important for all residents to explore the freedom to read at our local libraries,” said Bekker.
