Water pollution case against Sasol in Secunda postponed again

Case is postponed to August 7.

Sasol’s court case about water pollution was again heard in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on July 14.

The fuel giant was forced to appear in court after a former Sasol employee, Ian Erasmus, took the company to court in September last year.

While Erasmus was still working at Sasol as a senior process controller in 2005, he reported to his managers that a large valve was leaking, causing pollution in the water.

He claims nothing was done and he then began sending emails to senior management.

Erasmus then also contacted the company’s ethics line and believes he had been intimidated by his senior managers since then.

Erasmus alleges he was victimised and eventually suspended in 2017.

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) heard about the matter and opened a criminal case against Sasol.

The case was postponed to August 7.
