Family of murdered eMbalenhle woman wants justice

Phumzile Makoena’s mother does not know what to tell her grandchildren about their mother’s murder.

The accused in a double murder in eMbalenhle is set to appear in front of the Evander regional court on August 14 during which it is expected he will be referred to the high court.

Leloko Mapitsi was charged with murder after Phumzile Makoena’s body was found in his bed earlier this year.

The body was found when Mapitsi’s mother alerted the police of a foul odour and flies coming from her son’s room. She called the police when she could not access the room.

Her son had locked the door and taken the key with him when he was arrested two days before and was still in police custody at the time of the initial discovery.

Police also found the body of Doctor Mofokeng under the bed on February 18. Phumzile’s mother Nobelungu Pounde told the Ridge Times the family wants to know why their daughter died.

Pounde said it is painful because her daughter left behind two children, a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.

“When I look at her children, I always cry and ask myself what will I say to these children when they ask me about their mother’s whereabouts.

“That is why we are always in court – to hear what happened to her,” said Pounde.

“I am attending trauma counselling because I still cannot believe that Phumzile is no longer with us. It feels like a nightmare,” said Pounde.

Paunde said her daughter suffered from epilepsy and needed special attention. She said the family wants justice for Phumzile. They will not rest until they hear the truth.
