GMM goes back to court soon to face water contamination charges

The Green Scorpions claim they have enough evidence for a strong case against the municipality.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality will again appear in the Bethal Magistrate’s Court on August 8 for not complying with the National Environmental Management Act.

This happened after the Environmental Management Inspectorate (EMI), popularly known as the Green Scorpions, and local environmental organisations took the municipality to court for water contamination.

The municipality was supposed to appear in court on May 3, but because of the unavailability of the institution’s legal representative, the court postponed the case to June 22.

The municipal manager, Elliot Maseko, and the municipality’s representative were in court on June 22.

In response to Ridge Times’ questions sent to the municipality, the municipality spokesperson Donald Green said GMM has been attending to the sewage issues and spillages across its jurisdiction.

According to the Green Scorpions, they investigated the sewage spills and general waste problems around the municipality. They claim they have evidence of water pollution by the municipality to present a strong case.
