House robberies spike in eMbalenhle

A group of men armed with dangerous weapons robbed one homeowner of his belongings.

The police in eMbalenhle are concerned about the increase in house robberies.

Constable Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle police spokesperson, said something drastic is needed to stop the escalation of this crime.

According to Mthethwa, in the most recent case on May 22, a victim was robbed of his belongings worth about R10 000.

The victim heard a knock on the door of his house that morning. He checked through the window and noticed several men armed with dangerous weapons.

The thugs kicked the door open and three entered the house. They ordered the victim to keep quiet.

The robbers stole his laptop, plasma TV, cellphones and other items. A case of house robbery was opened, but no one has been arrested.

In another incident, a woman was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash and her belongings when an unknown man broke into her home while she was asleep.

The man was armed with a panga. Mthethwa said a noise woke up the woman. When she opened her bedroom door to investigate, she saw the perpetrator.

He threatened to kill her and then demanded her cellphone and money. The victim gave it to him. The robber also stole her TV.

The police investigation revealed that the robber gained entry by forcing open a door. No one has yet been arrested.

Mthethwa pleaded with the eMbalenhle community to revive neighbourhood watch initiatives to fight this crime.
She said the police are there to assist the community.
