Secunda’s Pilgrim South nominated for Afri-Indie Award

To be nominated for the Afri-Indie Awards is an achievement on its own.

Local rock band Pilgrim South from Secunda has been nominated in the category of best live rock band – newcomer at the South African Independent Artist Music Awards (Afri-Indie Award), which will take place as a red carpet event at the Colosseum Reale in Pretoria on April 4.

To be nominated for the Afri-Indie Awards is an achievement on its own.

The awards acknowledge brilliant original work delivered by South African musical artists, songwriters, music producers and videographers.

This year’s Afri-Indie Awards will also see top bands and artists such as Patricia Lewis, Carike Keuzenkamp, Prime Circle, Springbok Nude Girls, Wonderboom, Manuek Escorico, Amor Vittone, Ray Dylan and many more in their nominated categories.

Secunda-born Renaldo Alberts is nominated in the categories of best pop single, best newcomer and best overall single.

Established in 2017, Pilgrim South has seen a change in some of its members and has been performing as a solid group since 2019 with Jacques Koen (lead guitar), Frikkie Swanepoel (rhythm guitar), Christiaan Ras (vocals), Brendon Fick (drums) and Wihan Franzsen (bass guitar).

Some may be familiar with their hit songs Stone People Walking, Old Man Moonshine, The Desert Song, The Wolf and more.

A mix between southern rock, alternative rock and any rock you can think of, Pilgrim South is also influenced by the blues.

“It does not matter what it is. In the studio, if it sounds cool, we go with it,” said Koen.

All members have day jobs. However, performing their music in front of an audience is a hobby they love.

Pilgrim South’s nomination came after a one-night random performance in Middelburg where they were spotted by Rea le Roux

“Thank you to our wives who give us the space to do this and the late nights they have to put up with,” said Koen.

Koen also thanked their supporters and said they hope to see more support from the local community of Secunda.
