Edwin Rademeyer from Rayton is on his way to the World Karate Championship

Grade 7 learner excels at karate and pigeon sport

Karate wizz kid, Edwin Rademeyer, a Grade 7 learner from Rayton Primary School, has been chosen for the 2023 South African national Shotokan karate team that will take part in the 11th WUKF World Karate Championship in Dundee, Scotland from 13 to 16 July.

However, the cost of the tour is very expensive, costing around R55 000 per person.

This includes airline tickets, accommodation, day trips, team attire which includes a tracksuit, shirt and backpack, as well as admin and travel agent fees, travelling between Edinburgh and Dundee and lastly Visa fees.

Edwin’s guardian, Naomi Kloppers, who is also his biological grandmother, has already paid a deposit of R15 000 to secure his spot, but any additional help will be appreciated to make this dream a reality.

Edwin, currently a blue belt, began his karate career at the end of February 2019, and in April 2019 he obtained his Gauteng Opens colours.

His other hobbies include pigeon racing in which he found an interest at the age of three.

When he was only five years old he began taking part in pigeon sport and in Grade 2 (2017) he received his first award for the Best Junior Long Distance Champion.

“After that, he excelled so much in pigeons and karate that on 7 March 2020 he walked away with two gold medals in karate and we had to rush to the airport to pick up his award in George for his pigeon races,” gushed Naomi.

Edwin has big dreams to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps of becoming an electrician and when he gets his black belt, he wants to own his own karate dojo where he wants to teach others to master the art.

When asked why he likes karate so much, he simply blushed and said, “I do not know, I have a passion for it.”

This little man is unstoppable. To sponsor Edwin, contact Naomi on 072 981 4299.
