Suspects in robbery of shop in Leandra get bail of R5 000 each

The second suspect was arrested when he tried to use a six-year-old girl as his shield.

The Leandra Magistrate’s Court granted bail of R5 000 each to four armed robbery suspects on Monday, October 31. 

The first accused was denied bail because of other related cases in which he is involved. These suspects were arrested during an armed robbery of a business in Leandra on Saturday, October 15.

Three of them tried to hide in the shop’s ceiling. All five men were arrested, the stolen money recovered and three guns seized.

According to the police, the 51-year-shop owner, his wife, employees and customers were held hostage by the robbers.

One of the robbers allegedly pointed a gun at the police as he headed towards the door, but he was shot.

A gun with its serial number filled off was retrieved from his possession and the suspect was arrested when the police invaded the supermarket.

The second suspect was arrested when he tried to use a six-year-old girl as his shield.

When police continued with their search for other suspects, the extra three suspects were also arrested while hiding inside the ceiling.

These three suspects were also found in possession of firearms with filed-off serial numbers.

According to the police, three firearms with10 rounds of ammunition were confiscated and the suspect who sustain injuries was taken to hospital where he was under police guard.

The four suspects first appeared before the Leandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 18. The case was then postponed for the bail application.

Their case was postponed to Wednesday, December 7.
