Concrete slabs in Florapark, Standerton, pose a danger

The road has no street lights and children often walk in the evening to the corner store for bread, milk or cool drinks and can hurt themselves.

There is no suggestion of proper housekeeping at Geelhout Crescent, Florapark after the Lekwa Municipality repaired a burst pipe in the main water line.

The repairs were done on January 18 this year and slabs of concrete were left behind.

Keith Cousins, a resident, first alerted the Standerton Advertiser to the sinkhole forming.

The road has no street lights and children often walk in the evening to the corner store for bread, milk or cool drinks and can hurt themselves.

Motorists furthermore travel the crescent in the early hours of the morning when returning from their shifts at either Tutuka Power Station or New Denmark Colliery.

According to Cousins, the problem has been reported at Lekwa and promises were made.

“The municipality has the necessary equipment to remove the concrete,” he added.

Refuse is scheduled to be removed every Monday and some people dump their rubbish throughout the week at this spot.

The newspaper sent a WhatsApp message to Thando Nkosi, communications officer at the municipality, on Tuesday, November 1.

Assistance was requested to solve the problem. Nkosi replied by saying she was on leave.
