Rethabile Njibu, Sasol’s social impact manager, encouraged the elderly to take good care of their health.

Ethel Makhele, the chairperson of the GMM Older Persons Forum said the international day for elderly persons should remind families and community members of the importance of the elderly people.

“Some of our peers are being abused by either their family members or some community members on the street.

“They need to understand that as you grow older, it will become your turn to forget easily and your thinking will become different from the time you were younger,” said Masuku.

The United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons.

This was preceded by initiatives such as the International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.

In 1991, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Principles for Older Persons.
