Police catch duo stealing railway tracks at Daggakraal near Amersfoort

One of the suspects is also an accused in another, similar case.

Two suspects (ages 56 and 61) who were caught stealing railway tracks on Friday, October 14, are expected to appear before the Amersfoort  Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 17.

They were arrested during a multidisciplinary approach operation conducted by the Hawks’ Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Daggakraal Vispol and Transnet Investigators for tampering and damaging of essential infrastructure.

Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Capt Dineo Sekgotodi, said the team followed up information about people who were busy removing the railway tracks at Daggakraal.

“The team caught the duo in the act. They were immediately arrested and police confiscated the removed railway tracks.”

According to Sekgotodi, one of the suspects is also an accused in a Morgenzon case that happened in April.

The court postponed that case to November 15.

The two men arrested on Friday were charged and detained pending their first court appearance on Monday.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate For Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Zodwa Mokoena, applauded the multidisciplinary approach conduct by the team.

She cautioned the public to refrain from damaging essential infrastructure which affects the economy of the country.

She concluded by appreciating the loyal citizens who continually report the illegal activities to the police.
