Sanco flexes its muscles about water problems in Standerton

“Water is a necessity and basic right enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa,” Mosia concluded.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) expressed its deepest concern about the water situation in the town and the township.

The zonal chairperson, William Mosia, and Khulekani Msomi, paid a visit to the Standerton Advertiser on Tuesday, October 11.

Both men agreed that it is not healthy to drink tap water. A municipal water truck makes its rounds in Ward 5, which includes Jabavu, Moroka, Ext 2, Phalama and Crossroads.

“Sanco has written two letters to the Lekwa Municipality to schedule an appointment with the mayor, Delani Louis Thabethe, and municipal manager, Malosi Lamola, to table our problems,” Mosia said.

According to him, the request was ignored and on one occasion, when at the offices, they were sent from pillar to post.

“The community is complaining,” Mosia added.

He also said Sanco will not rest until the matter is resolved and they would like Rand Water to intervene and come to the rescue.

Mention was also made of the proximity of the Vaal River and Grootdraai Dam.

“The water shortage adds to the plight of the people. The organisation is not going to fold its arms.”

Mosia mentioned the industries in town and the need for water supply, echoing the refrain that Standerton might become a ghost town. Job losses would be the result after industries close down.

“Water is a necessity and basic right enshrined in the Constitution of South Africa. We will mobilise the locals to make our voices heard,” Mosia concluded.

The Standerton Advertiser sent a WhatsApp message to Thando Nkosi, communications officer at Lekwa, the same day.

Enquiries were made about Sanco’s request for an appointment and feedback was asked on the current water situation. Nkosi replied timeously that she will make enquiries.
