Umzimto murder suspect appear in court

Body found after fire was extinguished. Secunda police speak out.

Mr Kiran Ramraj appeared in the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 10 November for arson and the murder of his domestic worker.

Police found the naked body of the woman in Mr Ramraj’s garden flat in Umzinto Street, Extension 22, on 6 November.

They were alerted when a fire erupted in the flat at about 11am.

Neighbours desperately tried to extinguish the fire with hose pipes, but the gates to the yard were locked.

The tenant of the house on the same yard was notified and rushed to the scene.

She unlocked the gates and arranged for more hose pipes.

The woman’s  body was found in the bedroom of the flat after the fire was extinguished.

Mr Ramraj was arrested on Friday, 7 November at 2am near Sasol Garage in Secunda.

A newspaper source said he apparently cannot remember anything of the fateful day.

His wife was arrested on Thursday, but was released on Friday afternoon.

Mr Ramraj remains in custody and will again appear in court on Monday, 17 November.

The newspaper is trying  to ascertain from the Secunda police whether the woman who died’s next of kin has been notified of her death, as well as her name.

At this stage the police spokesman does not answer her phone.

Police suspect murder and the forensic team is on the scene.

The identity of the woman cannot be made known at this stage, as the next of kin has not yet been notified.
