Govan Mbeki Speaker slams land invaders

Residents demand land because townships are overcrowded.

SECUNDA – Mr Cyril Gwiji, Speaker of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, said land invasion continues to pose a challenge in the area.

He said residents must be patient and refrain from invading unoccupied land.

People have occupied land illegally in Lebohang, Kinross and eMbalenhle in the past few months and there are pending court cases in some of these invasion cases.

“Land invasion is a crime in terms of the law and our councillors and the community must assist us to prevent criminal acts. “As much as we already indicated that we know and understand their plight, invasion will not solve the problem,” said Mr Gwiji.

Residents demanded during the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) 2014/2015 review held recently that the municipality prioritise the buying of land in order to allocate stands to people who need them.

They said the townships are overcrowded which result in people being forced to occupy land illegally.
