Ramadan begins

It also presents the opportunity to self-reflect and to practice self-control while cleansing the body and mind.

The month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calender, has begun.

During Ramadan, Muslims around the world sawm (fasting from dawn until dusk) for the entire month.

Muslims are not allowed to consume any food or drink water.

During the fasting period, Muslims are reminded of the suffering of the poor.

It also presents the opportunity to self-reflect and to practice self-control while cleansing the body and mind.

During this time, Muslims will also focus on the community, charity and prayer.

From the editor and staff of the Standerton Advertiser and Ibis we wish all Muslim readers and advertisers well over the fast.
