Covid-19: Victims of domestic violence help lines

For many staying indoors this is a 21-day lifestyle we all need to adjust to but for victims of domestic violence this is a place they cannot escape.

SECUNDA – For some, the 21 day lockdown may seem as an opportunity to rekindle our family lives and focus on what is really important at this time and that is the safety for our husbands, wives, children, parents and all our loved ones whom are vulnerable to being exposed to the Covid-19 virus.

But as South African we are not only facing the Covid-19 virus but a virus of domestic violence which is a cause for much concern.

For many staying indoors this is a 21-day lifestyle we all need to adjust to but for victims of domestic violence this is a place they cannot escape.

Chantelle Prinsloo of Curamus Victims Support Center said that even though it is a lockdown protecting abused victims is still a priority for the SAPS. Courts are still open to attend to domestic violence cases.

Victims of domestic violence can be assured that they have a place of safety should they need to get out of an environment that is life threatening.

Ms Prinsloo said local security companies such as Stratcon, Roman Tactical Response Unit and Delta 1 Rescue, have all come onboard to ensure the safety of persons whom are trapped in an abusive environment.

“At this point we don’t have a specific place for these victims to go, but if we are delta with serious cases for example life or death, together with our local security companies we will assist to give you a safe place to stay,” said Ms Prinsloo.

Emergency numbers for victims of domestic violence are as follows:

Secunda SAPS 017 624 2242 or 017 624 2243
Curamus Victims Support Center – 084 703 3390 • Standby 079 114 9592
Roman Tactical Response – 072 335 4442
Stratcon – 079 870 6897
